Most Expensive Movie 2008! Are you considering using leap and upgrading your DVD collection? This article suggests a couple of things you might want to consider prior to taking the Blu-ray plunge.
Developments in technology are improving our entertainment all the time. New standards and devices allow films to become rendered in greater detail. Sound and color depth is richer than previously. We can now like a cinematic experience of the comfort of our own home.
There is simply one drawback to all of this. As the technology develops and new standards and formats are introduced you are left being forced to buy the same films continuously. Anyone who painstakingly rebuilt their video collection on DVD will know exactly what I'm referring to.
With the arrival of Blu-ray, which includes emerged like a clear winner over HD DVD, we have been faced with one more new format. If we want to enjoy our favorite films in hd then we're going to have buy them all over again. The upside will be the jump in quality for both picture and audio is comparable to the jump from video to DVD. Make no mistake Blu-Ray movies look a lot better than DVD movies.
Before you concentrate on the upgrade to Blu-ray there are some prerequisites. To really get the best from this format you will want the following.
When you are looking at actually buying the individual films, you happen to be likely to come upon a couple of problems. For starters simply a relatively small number of films have been released on Blu-ray up to now. There are thousands and thousands of movies which may have not yet been released as Blu-ray discs and the sad the fact is that many of them never will be. The more obscure the film, the more unlikely it will be re-released in the new format.
I still a large assortment of obscure martial arts films on video which never made the transition to DVD. Sometimes even some of your favorite films slip through the cracks and the best you can do is record them onto your PC or DVD recorder to produce DVD versions. This allows you to ditch the bulky videos but obviously it's not going to improve the excellence of the picture or sound. In that regard the transition from DVD to Blu-ray is less painful. Many Blu-ray players will also be capable of upscaling DVDs and squeezing more quality from them. It is also worth indicating that some Blu-ray transfers are shoddily done and won't offer anything much at night quality of your upscaled DVD. It is definitely worth looking over some reviews before you buy.
Another problem you might encounter when you look to rebuild your film collection on Blu-ray could be the old region nightmare. The world is divided into regions and players and discs from one region aren't supposed to are employed in other regions. This allows distributors to produce irritating differences in release dates and withhold titles from certain regions. In practice it is designed to allow for some localization but in reality the region strategy is anachronistic and deeply annoying which is well regular past time they ditched it. You may find your favorite title is accessible elsewhere and not in your region.
As with all the DVD format almost always there is a way round this and you'll find multi-region Blu-ray players. If you intend to import Blu-rays off their regions then make sure the Blu-ray player you purchase will let you watch them. Be careful when you choose and read carefully because a number of the multi-region Blu-ray players are strangely not multi-region for DVDs.
Having negotiated these pitfalls you'll probably be keen to locate an actual set of all the films released on the Blu-ray format. Check out the website High-Def Digest for such a list. Another website which aims to hide all Blu-ray releases and includes in depth reviews which discuss the film as well as the quality of the Blu-ray transfer is Blu-ray.com. Both sites provide a release schedule of what is into the future.
There are lots of surprising omissions from the listing of releases on Blu-ray so you may be in for any disappointment. Not many film fans should be able to reconstruct their libraries completely on Blu-ray so at the moment hang on in your DVDs. As the new technology passes down in price and people adopt the hardware don't be surprised to see a lot more Blu-ray releases.
It is also worth pointing out that physical discs aren't the only method to watch high definition films and another growing trend is good for people to download movies online. There are a number of online services offering downloadable high-definition films this also is something don't be surprised to see more of as Broadband speeds and penetration always increase. With this in mind some Blu-ray players have USB and storage device ports. This would let you transfer a movie from your computer for a Blu-ray player, although you will need to ensure the file is within the correct format.
Many folks prefer to plug our computers right into our HDTV's along with the majority of models support this. However whether you want a PC next in your TV depends upon your tastes as well as the layout of your property, and a Blu-ray player with USB or memory card functionality will provide you with an alternative.
There is no doubt that for most films the Blu-ray standard supplies a significant improvement over DVD. The thing is Blu-ray discs less difficult more expensive and much like DVDs they are going to get cheaper with time. These first Blu-ray releases will often be bare-bones high are likely to be special editions and director's cuts in the future.
At the second I'd suggest handpicking some of your favorite films and upgrading them. Keep the most your DVD collection and get new releases on Blu-ray. The two can coexist a great deal more easily than video and DVD ever did.
